This thesis aims to rethink the villa type by going back to a quintessential moment in the development of the villa--Rudolf Wittkower's “Architectural Principles in the Age of Humanism”. In his diagram, "schematized plans of 11 of Palladio's villas," Wittkower redraws a selection of villas and adds his own 12th villa which he calls Palladio's geometric pattern and which Rowe will later allude to as the ideal villa.
The set of 12 villas is read as a transformation from the ideal to the specific villa as a reaction to site and programmatic forces. Until now the formal approach and the search for architectural autonomy have seemed incompatible with the terms "site" and "program". The analysis of Wittkower's 12 villas is therefore an expanded view of formalism that includes these terms while maintaining autonomy within the discipline of architecture.
